Some paintings are derived from direct observation, while others are abstractions derived from study and experimentation. I represent a place and its objects in its most basic compositional elements. I seek to complement composition through subtle layering, expressive color, and texture.

Inspiration for my paintings comes from visual memories and everyday surroundings, as well as from travels. As a landscape painter, I observe and participate in the natural world and revel in the flux of seasons and geography of a place. This flux provides for endless visual ideas.

The majority of my traditional landscape paintings begin with the plein-air method of execution. I then bring them into my studio for further experimentation. Still others are derivatives of the plein-air paintings, meaning that the first painting acts as the source for successive paintings. The newest paintings, that combine elements of still life and landscape, are painted entirely in the studio. This variation incites me to further experiment with composition and technique.
